§ 01About the project

Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) operates one of Africa's most advanced automotive manufacturing plants in Kariega (formerly Uitenhage), Eastern Cape. Established in 1946, the plant has evolved into a major global export hub, producing the Volkswagen Polo and Polo Vivo for both domestic and international markets. The facility includes a full body shop, paint shop, and assembly line, and was selected as the sole producer of the right-hand-drive Polo for global markets. Under South Africa's Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP), VWSA has invested billions of rand in modernising the plant, which exports approximately 70% of its production to over 30 countries.

§ 02What it aims to do
  1. 01Manufacture over 160,000 vehicles per year for domestic sale and export to global markets
  2. 02Serve as the global production hub for right-hand-drive Volkswagen Polo models
  3. 03Maximise local content and develop the Eastern Cape automotive supplier ecosystem
  4. 04Contribute to South Africa's automotive sector which targets 1% of global production by 2035
  5. 05Maintain world-class quality standards matching VW Group's global benchmarks
  6. 06Train and employ thousands of South Africans in advanced manufacturing
