Kibali Gold Mine
Africa's largest gold mine, producing over 700,000 ounces annually from the heart of the DRC.
Kibali is one of the world's largest gold mines, situated in the remote northeast of the DRC. It is operated by Barrick Gold (45%) in a joint venture with AngloGold Ashanti (45%) and the DRC state mining company SOKIMO (10%). The mine poured its first gold in September 2013 and produced approximately 750,000 ounces in 2023. Kibali combines open-pit and underground operations with a state-of-the-art metallurgical complex.
- 01Sustain gold production above 700,000 ounces per year through underground expansion
- 02Extend mine life through continued exploration and resource conversion
- 03Operate three hydroelectric power stations to minimize carbon footprint
- 04Deliver economic development to one of the DRC's most remote regions
- 05Maintain industry-leading safety and environmental management standards
- 06Transition progressively from open-pit to underground mining

Joint Venture Formed
Barrick Gold and AngloGold Ashanti formed a joint venture to develop the Kibali gold deposit.
2013 · completed
First Gold Pour
Kibali poured its first gold bar in September 2013, marking the start of commercial production.
2017 · completed
Underground Production Begins
Underground mining commenced, adding higher-grade ore to supplement the open pit.
2019 · completed
Record Production
The mine achieved record annual gold production of over 814,000 ounces.
2022 · completed
Autonomous Haulage
Kibali deployed automated underground haulage trucks, becoming one of the first in Africa to do so.
2025 · in progress
Continued Underground Expansion
Ongoing development of deeper underground levels to sustain production through the 2030s.
Mineral Resource
Gold Mineral Reserve
Proven and probable reserves of approximately 11.3 million ounces of gold as of year-end 2023.
Processing Plant
Metallurgical Complex
A 7.2 Mtpa processing plant with gravity separation, flotation, CIL, and ultra-fine grind circuits.
Energy Infrastructure
Hydroelectric Power
Three run-of-river hydroelectric stations on the Kibali River providing approximately 44 MW of clean power.
Mining Infrastructure
Underground Mine
Sublevel caving operation accessed via twin declines, producing the majority of ore feed.
Exploration Asset
Exploration Tenements
Extensive exploration permits covering over 3,000 square kilometres surrounding the mine.
- Sublevel caving underground mining method
- Automated underground haulage with autonomous trucks
- Carbon-in-leach (CIL) gold processing circuit
- Gravity separation gold recovery
- Three on-site hydroelectric power stations (Nzoro, Ambarau, Azambi)
- Paste backfill plant for underground void management
What it means for the community
Kibali employs over 5,500 people directly and supports approximately 11,000 indirect jobs, with over 95% of the workforce being Congolese nationals. The mine has invested more than $250 million in community development since inception, including schools, health clinics, roads, and agricultural programs. It generates substantial tax revenues and royalties for both the national and provincial governments.
