§ 01About the project

Tasiast is an open-pit gold mine in the Sahara about 300 km north of Nouakchott, owned and operated by Canada's Kinross Gold. Kinross completed the Tasiast 24k project in 2023, raising mill throughput to about 24,000 tonnes a day, and added a solar power plant to cut diesel use. The mine produced about 621,000 ounces in 2023, a record, and about 622,000 gold-equivalent ounces in 2024. By the end of 2024 Tasiast had produced about 5 million ounces since commercial production began.

§ 02What it aims to do
  1. 01Sustain production of around 600,000 gold-equivalent ounces a year
  2. 02Run the mill at about 24,000 tonnes a day
  3. 03Reduce diesel use and emissions with on-site solar power
  4. 04Extend the mine life through exploration around the main pit
§ 03Milestones
  1. 2007 · completed

    Production Start

    Gold production began at Tasiast.

  2. 2010 · completed

    Kinross Acquisition

Kinross acquired Tasiast through its takeover of Red Back Mining.

  3. 2023 · completed

    Tasiast 24k Completed

The mill expansion and the solar plant were completed on schedule and budget.

  4. 2023 · completed

    Record Year

Tasiast produced about 621,000 ounces of gold, up 15% on the previous year.

  5. 2024 · completed

    5 Million Ounces

Output reached about 622,000 gold-equivalent ounces, bringing the total since start-up to about 5 million ounces.

§ 04Engineering & resources

Mineral Resource

West Branch Orebody

The main gold deposit mined from the open pit.

Processing Plant

Expanded Mill

CIL plant processing about 24,000 tonnes of ore a day.

Energy Infrastructure

Solar Plant

On-site solar generation to reduce reliance on diesel.

  • Large-scale open-pit mining
  • Carbon-in-leach (CIL) gold processing
  • Mill expansion to about 24,000 tonnes a day (Tasiast 24k)
  • On-site solar power plant

What it means for the community

Tasiast is one of Mauritania's largest private investments and a significant source of export earnings and tax revenue. Operating in remote desert brings challenges of water, power and logistics, which the solar plant partly addresses.
