Obuasi Gold Mine

A century-old Ghanaian gold mine reborn through a $545 million modern redevelopment.

Explainer film in production
§ 01About the project

Obuasi is one of the world's premier gold ore bodies, having produced over 30 million ounces since mining began in 1897. Owned by AngloGold Ashanti, the mine was placed on care and maintenance in 2016 and subsequently redeveloped into a modern mechanized underground operation. The Phase 3 redevelopment, costing approximately $545 million, brought the mine back to commercial production in 2019. It produced approximately 268,000 ounces of gold in 2023.

§ 02What it aims to do
  1. 01Ramp up production to a steady state of 400,000 ounces per year
  2. 02Complete Phase 3 underground mine development to access deeper ore zones
  3. 03Transform Obuasi from a legacy operation into a modern, mechanized mine
  4. 04Extend the mine life beyond 2040 through resource conversion and exploration
  5. 05Implement world-class safety systems to achieve zero-harm targets
  6. 06Create sustainable local economic benefits through preferential local procurement

§ 04Engineering & resources

Mineral Resource

Gold Ore Reserve

Ore reserves of approximately 5.3 million ounces, with a total mineral resource exceeding 30 million ounces.

Processing Plant

CIP Processing Plant

An upgraded 4,000 tpd carbon-in-pulp processing plant with gravity and flotation circuits.

Mining Infrastructure

KMS and KRS Shafts

Two main underground shafts and decline systems accessing ore to depths below 1,500 metres.

Processing Facility

Tailings Retreatment Plant

A dedicated plant retreating historical tailings to recover additional gold from legacy dumps.

  • Sub-level open stoping with paste backfill
  • Mechanized longhole drilling and blasting
  • Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold processing
  • Modern ventilation and refrigeration systems
  • Automated mine dispatch and fleet management
  • Tailings retreatment and sulphide flotation

What it means for the community

The Obuasi redevelopment has created over 6,500 direct and contractor jobs, making it one of the largest employers in the Ashanti Region. The mine contributes significantly to Ghana's position as Africa's leading gold producer. AngloGold Ashanti has invested over $100 million in community development programs including education, healthcare, water supply, and alternative livelihood projects in the Obuasi municipality.
