Fekola Gold Mine

B2Gold's flagship gold mine, one of the lowest-cost large gold producers in the world.

Explainer film in production
§ 01About the project

Fekola is a large open-pit gold mine in southwestern Mali, owned and operated by B2Gold Corp (80%) with the Government of Mali holding 20%. The mine was built on time and under budget, commencing production in 2017. Fekola has rapidly become one of the world's lowest-cost large gold mines, producing approximately 589,000 ounces in 2023. A major expansion completed in 2022 increased processing capacity from 7.5 Mtpa to 10 Mtpa. B2Gold has also commissioned a 30 MW solar plant to power the mine, one of the largest off-grid solar installations in West Africa.

§ 02What it aims to do
  1. 01Produce approximately 550,000-600,000 ounces of gold per year
  2. 02Operate as one of the world's lowest-cost large gold producers
  3. 03Maximize the expanded 10 Mtpa processing plant capacity
  4. 04Integrate the 30 MW solar power plant to reduce carbon emissions and fuel costs
  5. 05Extend mine life through satellite pit development at Cardinal and Anaconda Area
  6. 06Continue responsible mining with strong community and environmental programs

§ 04Engineering & resources

Mineral Resource

Gold Mineral Reserves

Proven and probable reserves of approximately 4.6 million ounces of gold at the Fekola deposit.

Processing Plant

Processing Plant

Expanded 10 Mtpa SAG/ball mill and CIL processing plant with gravity gold recovery.

Energy Infrastructure

Solar Power Plant

A 30 MW solar photovoltaic installation, one of the largest off-grid solar plants in West Africa.

Exploration Asset

Satellite Deposits

Cardinal, Anaconda Area, and Bantako satellite deposits within trucking distance of the Fekola plant.

  • Large-scale open-pit mining with 100-tonne haul trucks
  • SAG mill and ball mill grinding circuit expanded to 10 Mtpa
  • Carbon-in-leach (CIL) gold recovery
  • Gravity concentration for coarse gold
  • 30 MW solar photovoltaic power plant with battery storage
  • Satellite pit mining and trucking from regional deposits

What it means for the community

Fekola employs approximately 3,000 people, with over 95% being Malian nationals. B2Gold has invested over $50 million in community development including construction of schools, health clinics, wells, and a malaria prevention program that has dramatically reduced malaria incidence in surrounding communities. The solar power plant reduces diesel consumption by approximately 13 million litres per year, cutting CO2 emissions by over 39,000 tonnes annually.
