Ahafo Gold Mines (South and North)
Newmont's Ghana operation, which added a second mine, Ahafo North, in 2025.
Newmont's Ahafo operation in Ghana's Ahafo Region now has two mines. Ahafo South, near Kenyasi, combines open-pit and underground mining and reported gold reserves of about 4.1 million ounces at the end of 2025. Ahafo North, about 30 km away, poured its first gold on 19 September 2025 and reached commercial production on 30 October 2025. Newmont expects it to produce 275,000-325,000 ounces a year over a 13-year mine life. Together the two mines are expected to produce about 750,000 ounces a year, making Ahafo one of Africa's largest gold operations.
- 01Ramp Ahafo North up to 275,000-325,000 ounces a year through 2026
- 02Produce about 750,000 ounces a year across Ahafo South and North
- 03Replace depleting reserves at Ahafo South through exploration
- 04Support local employment and suppliers in the Ahafo Region

What it means for the community
Ahafo is one of Ghana's largest gold operations and a major employer and taxpayer in the Ahafo Region. Newmont makes carried-interest payments to the Ghanaian state. Large mines in the region have also faced long-running questions about land compensation, resettlement and relations with artisanal miners.
